The Korta Katarina (KK) Southern Croatian winery and its villa “Rivijera Orebić” (or-ub-itch) are a wine lovers dream. The first venue of its kind in Southern Croatia, the winery, villa, and vineyards are perched on the edge of the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea and provide breathtaking views of Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. The estate is located in the small coastal town of Orebić (or-ub-itch), a region renowned for its culture, seaports and winemaking traditions that date back to the Roman Empire. For centuries, ‘kortas’ were the center of family gatherings for sea captains and sailors embarking on worldly adventures. The KORTA KATARINA winery name represents the kortas/gardens of Croatia and the family name Katarina/Katharine of KK founders and owners Lee and Penny Anderson.

Winemaker Miho Rozic has a total of about 30,000 vines, most of them are at the famous and special position of Mill. Position Mili dates back to the Dubrovnik Republic. Wines with on this micro-location are affected by the wind that often blows from the direction of Ston, to be exact from Ston salt fields. These vineyards are the rare ones that were not devastated by phylloxera in the 19th century. Mili is a position of unique microclimate characteristics, southern exposure on the Peljesac peninsula. Similar as well known and protected positions of Dingac and Postup, but a little further south to even more unreachable terrain. Wines made from this terrain are very specific.

Dingač, the first place in Croatia recognized, in 1961, as an appellation with “Protected Geographical Origin°. The indigenous variety Plavac Mali has been producing the best wines for centuries. Dingač has its own path, carved into the mountain by the winegrowers, linking the vineyards to the port of Trstenik. From there, the first wines left for Europe. Dingač has always been the authentic heart of Croatian winemaking. It is very steep and specific, and all work in the vineyard is done by hand. Despite very sunny weather these vines manage to keep balanced acidity and develop layered aromas, specific only for this terroir of Dingač. Special for its triple insolation: from the sun, reflection from sea and reflection from quartz in the soil. After being hand-harvested, this grape goes through double sorting: cluster by cluster, and then berry by berry.

It is dense and full of fruity sweetness. On the first sips sweetness is hidden behind pronounced tannins. After two or three sips, you get used to the “gathering” effect. The thick and chunky, ripe tannins are pronounced. Moderate lasting aftertaste is marked by a combination of ripe fruit and barrique aromas. Over time, as the wine “inhales” flavors of cherry, plum and ferns begins to appear. Later on it somehow “refreshes” and become more complex with a good dose of floral aromas (rose, violet).

See, a rock, sun … Plavac Mali are words with which best describe the colors and flavors of the island Brač. Saša Senjković left his Hajduk football career in order to revive Brač’s winemaking traditions together with his wife Magdalena. Saša’s great grandfather, Ambroz (nicknamed Bosso) had tendered his Plavac Mali vineyards since time could remember so in honor of his efforts, the Senjković Winery have named their flagship Barrique red wine ‘Bosso’ after him, with the label depicting the legend himself. However, Senjković have one more Plavac Mali and that is Bročko Rič.

The winery is from the island of Brač, unique and famous for its white stone (Stina). Many famous Croatian poets, authors, sculptors and painters were born on Brač. Brač stone has always been a source of inspiration due to its beauty, but it is also a symbol of hardship when it comes to viticulture and viniculture. And that is where the inspiration for the name STINA comes from. In the Dalmatian dialect, this word means stone, the strongest symbol of the island of Brač.
