The title of the best Croatian sommelier goes to Dubrovnik

Nobody in Croatia will serve better wine than Siniša Lasana, the sommelier of the Proto restaurant in Dubrovnik. That is the conclusion of the 21st National Sommelier Championship organized by the Croatian Sommelier Club, where Lasan showed the best after strict written and practical exams.

On the hidden terrace, in the heart of the old town of Dubrovnik, there is a fish restaurant serving Mediterranean specialties. This restaurant is crowned with the Michelin plate because of its excellent cuisine and professional service and can from now on boast of having the best sommelier in Croatia. Siniša Lasan is their wine pearl.

Siniša Lasan has demonstrated the knowledge of the history of winegrowing, winemaking, and legislation (wine definition, protection, regionalization, etc.). He answered on questions from the profession on the subject of sommelier’s assignments, basic equipment, wine serving and decanting. He passed the practical part in which the candidates have to pass a blind tasting and describe a white and red wine in locating the origin, producer, vintage, durability and pairing.

In the competition for the best Croatian sommelier, at the Hotel Ambasador in Opatija, between 24 candidates only 12 of them entered the semi-finals. Filip Savić, the sommelier of Rovinj’s Monte Mulini and last year’s champion and Marko Šram, sommelier of the Dubrovnik’s Nautical who won the second place in this year’s Sommelier Dalmatia Championship, fought in the finals for the best place along with Siniša Lasan. They were asked to demonstrate the art of presentation and opening champagne, serving and decanting red wine, recognition of wines and strong alcoholic beverages, correcting the wine list, pairing, communicating with guests and dissolution of magnum.
