Muddy Arch Winery is located in historic Napa Valley and winemaker Chris Leonard has strong relationships with grape growers in Napa and surrounding wine regions. This red blend is a unique combination of three varietals, each picked a week or two earlier to make sure that they do not become over-ripe and sweet. Chris Leonard wanted this wine to be true to the varietal characteristics of the grapes and not a high-alcohol “fruit bomb” red wine often associated with American Zinfandel-based wines. This red blend is Zinfandel (44%), Carignane (32%), and Petit Verdot (24%). The result is a beautifully aromatic and flavorful red wine, combining an old-world approach to winemaking with the terroir of California.

What is beautiful about layering these particular grape varieties together is the resulting exotic bouquet. On the nose, there is abundant red and black fruit: boysenberry, huckleberry, blackberry, and some black cherry. These fruit notes are complemented by notes of graphite, tar, dark chocolate, espresso, black licorice, anise, sage and kalamata olives. A rich, structured, balanced wine with a chewy, deep finish with strong tannins delivered by the Petit Verdot.
