Macedonian Wine

The Republic of North Macedonia remains one of Europe’s last undiscovered wine countries. North Macedonia has a rich winemaking tradition, with evidence of wine production dating back to ancient times. Winemaking was always an important part of Macedonian culture and one of Macedonia's most important export products. The terroir of North Macedonia, with its diverse range of soils and climates, allows for producing unique and flavorful wines.

Macedonian wine regions

Macedonian wines are made in three winemaking regions:

  • West (Pelagonija-Polog)
  • East (Pchinja-Osogovo)
  • Central (Vardar river valley)

Central Region is the most important region where all the best Macedonian wines are made.

The Heartland of Macedonia's vineyards is the Tikveš district. Tikveš is the most well-known wine region in Macedonia. Tikveš has produced wine since the 4th century BC.

Several larger wineries produce today's best Macedonian wines, but more and more of smaller family-owned wineries are appearing.

Macedonian grape varieties

Today, Macedonian winemakers produce various red, white, and rosé wines using indigenous and international grape varieties. Macedonian wines are best characterized by their aromatic intensity and ripe fruitiness.

Some of the most popular varieties of Macedonian wine include Vranec, a powerful, full-bodied red wine made from the Vranac (or Vranec) grape.

Another indigenous red variety of North Macedonia is Stanušina. This variety is a rare find; today, the Stanushina finally receives all the attention it deserves.

Kratošija is another popular Macedonian grape variety, best known for producing red wines that are fruity and aromatic.

International grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, also thrive in North Macedonian climates.

Important share in Macedonian wine also belongs to Rkatsiteli (Georgian variety), Temjanika, Žilavka, Smederevka, Župljanka, and others.

If you’re looking for the best Macedonian wines, look no further. You can buy some of the best Macedonian wines online if you want to try them yourself. Whether you’re a wine enthusiast or just looking for something new to try, Macedonian wine is sure to please your taste buds!
