If you stand on the Eisenberg and gaze off into the distance, in addition to next-door neighbor Hungary you can also see clear across the Steiermark to Slovenia. It is the passion for the distinctive and remarkable terroir of the Eisenberg in Südburgenland that drives Matthias Krön and Markus Bach. On this extraordinary hillside with its old grapevines growing in steeply sloped vineyard sites, unique wines are created. The vineyard Saybritz lies on a sharply-falling parcel of land on the southwestern slope of the Eisenberg. The soils in this site feature slate as well as loam and rocky brown earth. Starting high atop the Eisenberg, it follows the hillside down to the eponymous village. Here there flourishes a totally unique microclimate: sunny with constant ventilation. The grapes for our Blaufränkisch Saybritz are harvested exclusively from this exceptional site on the Eisenberg, from vines up to sixty years of age.
Masculine and exotic, finely chiseled with a wild edge to it, impressive acidic structure and palpable tannins – the vineyard Saybritz yield vinous personalities that could only come into being on the Eisenberg. The grapes fermented on the skins for three weeks in open wooden casks, spontaneously with their native yeasts. After pressing, the wine was barrelled in 500-litre and 1600-liter wooden casks for maturing.
