The venerable Fattoria Machiavelli is an icon of the most ancient of Chianti traditions, found in Sant’Andrea in Percussina, and built in the cellar of what was once the home of Niccolò Machiavelli in his long years of exile from Florence, and in the adjacent Albergaccio tavern, where he spent his free time. Machiavelli was also a careful administrator of his vines and farmlands, which he managed and tended in person.
Niccolò Machiavelli inherited the Sant’Andrea in Percussina farm on the Chianti Classico hills from his father, messer Bernardo di Boninsegna, and retreated there in exile from Florence in the early 16th century. “Vermiglio” wine, an ancestor of today’s Chianti, was already produced back then, and aged in the deep cellars of Casa Machiavelli. This Gran Selezione is named after a vineyard that existed when Niccolò Machiavelli owned the farm, close to a spring of very pure water.
