The upcoming Prowein fair in Düsseldorf is set to witness a historic moment as the prestigious Vinistra Association, the leading Croatian wine association, announced the debut participation of the renowned Istrian wine region and its esteemed winemakers.

Thirteen prominent Istrian wineries will be among the 60 countries’ producers, showcasing their exquisite range of wines to the professional public and visitors from March 19 to 21. This marks the first-ever participation of the Vinistra as an association in this grand event, raising the profile of Istrian wines on the global stage. The event promises to be a significant platform for the wineries to showcase their winemaking excellence.

The list of Istrian winemakers who will present their wines at Prowein is:

“It is extremely important for us to present ourselves at the only international fair that monitors the world’s wine market. We are particularly interested in what is taking place in Germany, the most important tourism market for Croatia and Istria, one of the most popular destinations in the Mediterranean. With an emphasis on top-quality wines and the Istrian wine tradition, we will primarily present our native varieties – Malvasia Istriana and Teran,” said Luka Rossi, president of Vinistra.

Vinistra’s upcoming appearance at Prowein marks a significant step towards raising the profile of Istrian wines on the global stage. Vinistra’s presence at Prowein will provide a unique platform to showcase Istrian wines directly to the German market, helping to secure the recognition they deserve.

The move also comes as Croatian wines continue to gain recognition on a larger scale. Vinistra’s participation at Prowein will undoubtedly be crucial in promoting Croatian wines globally, especially those made from native varieties. This debut will surely highlight the unique flavors and aromas distinguishing native Istrian wines from their more famous counterparts.

The focus is on native Malvasia Istriana and Teran varieties

Two native varieties from the Istrian wine region, Malvasia Istriana, and Teran, have gained recognition among wine enthusiasts worldwide. While other varieties have the same names, Malvasia Istriana stands out as a white wine with over four hundred years of history in Istrian vineyards.

When produced as a fresh, dry wine, Malvasia has refined fruit and floral aromas and a color range from deep golden to pale yellow. But every wine lover should also pay attention to aged and orange Malvasia.

Teran, the second flagship wine of Istrian winemakers, is a robust red wine with a powerful character, distinct acidity, and a forest fruit aroma.

These award-winning indigenous wines will be under focus as true examples of Istria’s winemaking tradition.
